TAKE ACTION Against the Turnpike Highway Expansion!
Hello neighbor,
The fight against the Turnpike Expansion in Newark and Hudson County is reaching a critical decision point. We need everyone to take action to stop this devastating $10.7 billion project from going forward!
Two Actions You Can Take
Saturday June 29: Community Outreach Day to Stop the Turnpike Expansion
Join Hudson County Complete Streets and the Turnpike Trap Coalition for a critical and timely community outreach day to stop the disastrous NJ Turnpike expansion! On Saturday June 29th we will canvas the Greenville and Communipaw neighborhoods to educate residents who will be directly impacted by the air pollution and traffic from this massive project. And we'll organize folks to take important and timely actions to protect their communities from this looming threat. No experience is necessary to participate!
WHAT: Community Outreach to Stop the Turnpike Expansion!
WHEN: Saturday, June 29th | 10:30am-2pm

On July 9th, the Turnpike Authority will hold its first and only info session in Jersey City on their $10.7 Billion highway expansion project (more information next week!). Additionally, The US Coast Guard is currently accepting public comments on their inadequate draft Environmental Assessment for the project. With several critical actions and decisions on the project forthcoming, now is the time to build our support in the community to stop this environmental injustice!
On Saturday June 29th, we'll go out in pairs to knock on doors and talk to Jersey City residents who are out in their community that day. We’ll invite interested residents to attend the upcoming public info session on July 9th (and our big rally outside that info session!), we'll guide them to submit formal public comments on the draft environmental assessment for the project and encourage them to educate and organize their community to stop this environmental injustice.
No experience is necessary to participate! We'll meet in the Jackson Square Municipal Complex parking lot for an issue brief and canvass training before heading out to our assigned (turfs). We'll provide you with all the materials and information you need to effectively engage residents in this issue, including walk lists, informational handouts, petitions, public comment guides, clipboards, pens, etc. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated!
Thanks all, and looking forward to an impactful day of educating and organizing for environmental justice!

Thursday July 11: Final Day to Submit Comments to US Coast Guard
The NJ Turnpike Authority, in seeking approval from the US Coast Guard, is taking the unfathomable position that the highway expansion will have no substantial environmental impact. Make your voice heard on the record and submit a written public comment to the USCG demanding that the Project not proceed without a full environmental impact statement and that USCG reject the Turnpike Authority’s entirely inadequate Environmental Assessment TODAY. Send a comment here (a pre-drafted template is already waiting for you)!
WHAT: Public comment on the Federal Environmental Assessment in Opposition to Phase 1 of the I-78 Turnpike Widening
WHEN: The public comment period closes July 11, 2024
WHERE: Action Network Campaign
HOW: Use the letter template to send your public comments to the US Coast Guard

DEADLINE: Vision Zero Survey July 7th
